Dear General DEMOKAN
Thank you very much for your telegram, expressing your deep sympathy with our joint loss. It was Allah’s wish that we came to Turkey and the same power took him away now. We are only human beings and sometimes we stand before that Major Force, whether named Allah or God, and we cannot understand its reasonings.
At heart he was a Turk and only a Major Force could get him away from Turkey forever. I had him cremated. It is a very solemn crematorium. On his coffin was a wreath from me of light colored flowers and a ribbon with only my name. Besides I had a flower piece made, representing the Turkish flag, of red karanfils with the half moon and star in white karanfils. Thar also was on top of his coffin. I hope you agree that I took this pirivilege. I has asked for the Milli Marş to play, but they could not find the music and so the organ played the Turkish national anthem for him. I think that was just the way he would have liked.
However, we should not dwell on the past. His spirit and ideas were those of progress and what he created should not fall apart. He formed a group of brilliant, promising young scientist. Turkey needs them. But they still need a leader. Therefore, I hope you do not mind that I took the opportunity of the general aseembly of astronomers at Hamburg to write to several prominent astronomers to ask their help to find a successor, suitable to continue my husband’s work. His idea was to create a scientific centre also for other branches of science, cooperating with scientific institutes of Europe and the U.S., bringing and keeping the young Turkish scientists on the international level.
He was very proud of his assistants and students and felt towards them like a father.
Within short I will come back to Turkey, together with one of my sisters. I will come to say goodbye, because I do not think it would be right to say alone there.
I can assure you that I behave like the wife of Professor Kreiken should. Also I keep in mind the Turkish courage, which becomes apparent under the most difficult circumstances. Somehow I hear in my mind Atatürk’s favourite march, which is so full of courage, victory and sadness. Believe me, I do not cry, though my heart seems to break. I will go on living as Professor Kreiken’s wife should. I will find new work to do, and hope to join my husband when it is time for me to go.
I want to thank you for all cooperation given. Without the army’s help he could not have achieved what he did.
I hope you will permit me to come to say goodbye.
With kind regards,
Sincerely yours,
Miss Kreiken

TÜRKÇESİ:
Sayın General DEMOKAN
Müşterek kaybımız hakkında derin teessürünüzü belirten taziye telgrafınıza çok teşekkür ederim. Bizi Türkiye’ye birlikte getiren ve şimdi onu ebediyete intikal ettiren kudret, takdir-i ilahi idi.
Bayan Kreiken
